Definition
Long Distance refers to household goods that are transported interstate. An interstate move is defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as the transportation of goods in the United States which is between a place in a state and a place outside of that state (including a place outside the United States); or between two places in a state through another state or place outside of the United States.

The Law
Companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce must have a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Number. In addition, in order to transport household goods in interstate commerce or to arrange for their transport, Movers are required to have interstate operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA is an agency of the USDOT.

FMCSA operating authority is also referred to as an “MC,” “FF,” or “MX” number, depending on the type of authority that is granted. Unlike the USDOT Number application process, a Mover may need to obtain multiple operating authorities to support its planned business operations. Operating Authority dictates the type of operation a Mover may conduct, the cargo it may carry, and the geographical area in which it may legally operate. In addition, the mover is subject to the FMCSA’s rules and regulations.

For example, a mover is required to provide a copy of the brochure entitled, Ready to Move, and a copy of the booklet entitled Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move. A PDF version of these documents is also available at the FMCSA website www.protectyourmove.gov.

The primary responsibility for your protection rests with you in selecting a reputable household goods carrier, ensuring you understand the terms and conditions of your contract with your mover, and understanding and pursuing the remedies that are available to you in case problems arise.
